The West Palm Beach Veterans Affairs Medical Center is recruiting for a Nephrologist in the Medicine Service Nephrology Department. The incumbent physician will provide patient care pursing growth and development of the department within the context of emerging, competitive, and a positivehealth care environment. In conjunction with other station Nephrologists and Patient Care Services support personnel, the Nephrologist directs the care of all patients in Nephrology and Dialysis unit. The Nephrologist provides continuous vigilance, early intervention, and ongoing care with the goal to treat chronic kidney and end stage renal disease. Core privileges and proceduresto include ABG analysis / EKG interpretation, Hemodialysis & Peritoneal Dialysis, and SLED therapies. The Nephrologist also provides outpatient and inpatient consultation services during dedicated clinic and inpatient time and will be accountable to the Chief of Medicine to assureeffective delivery of care in Nephrology and Dialysis.
Scope of Practice:
- Work up, diagnosis, and provision of non-surgical treatment including consultation for both patients admitted patients and on an outpatient basis in need of care to treat general internal medicine and specialized problems related to the subspecialty of Nephrology.
- Attend outpatient Nephrology clinics assigned to, as well as in absence of, other providers to provide timely cross coverage without cancellations.
- Attend inpatient consultations as per assignment and schedule timely with complete consultation.
- Provide timely hand-offs to provide continuity of care with Nephrology and other subspecialty service providers, clinical staff and hospital personnel, and hospital leadership.
- Meet performance standards and quality measures with routine diagnosis and management of Anemia in ESRD- CKD, Renal Bone Mineral disorders, Secondary Hyperparathyroidism, and Preventive management and monitoring of Cardiovascular diseases.
- Participate in care coordination for all patients in dialysis unit and out patient clinicsto include primary care for dialysis patients, routine monitoring and control of hypertension,consultation for diabetes/cardiovascular diseases, cancer prevention, and diagnosis / treatment of dialysis related complications for other dialysis related complications.
- Vascular access monitoring with timely intervention and referral for AV fistula and AV graft placement.
- Provides input and support for inpatients with utilization management team, case managers and social workers to address timely psychosocial issues related to disease state developments.
- Performs the administrative components of patient care management, such as reviewing and understanding quality and performance measuresthatmeet current NKF- KDOQI as well as Medicare and CDC guidelines.
- Provides input and support in the development/updating of policies and procedures impacting Nephrology / Dialysis.
- Actively involved in teaching residents and students throughdidactic training.
- Attend Medicine Service staff meetings.
- Support miscellaneous activities of the Medical Service including committee assignments, QA activities, and other special projects that help fulfill and/or enhance the mission of the Department of Veterans Affairs as assigned by the Chief, Nephrology Section, Medicine Service or West Palm Beach VAMC Executive Leadership.

- Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with section A, chapter 3, paragraph 3g, this part.)
- Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
(1) Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
(2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
(3) For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
- Licensure and Registration. Physicians must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
- Residency Training. Physicians must have completed residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA Physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are:
(1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA), in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or
(2) Other residencies or their equivalents which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training.
- English Language Proficiency. Physicians appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
Preferred Experience: Board Certification in Nephrology

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
